Social media glossary

The terms behind every metric, payout and platform rule on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X, in plain English.

Algorithm

The ranking system a platform uses to decide which posts each person sees and in what order. Modern feeds predict how likely you are to watch, like, share or skip every candidate post, then sort by those predictions.

An app rarely has just one. Instagram runs separate systems for Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels. TikTok describes five steps for For You: selecting eligible videos, predicting interactions, ranking, a similarity check and recommendation rules. X has published the code for its For You feed, including weights for predicted likes, reposts and replies.

They share two habits. They lean heavily on how viewers behave with each post, and TikTok says follower count isn’t a direct factor at all. They also filter out content that breaks recommendation rules before ranking anything.

Tip: treat your analytics as the algorithm’s feedback. Watch time and shares tell you more than likes do.

Bot account

An account run by software rather than a person, often created in bulk to follow, like, view or comment automatically. Platforms delete the bot accounts they detect, which is one reason follower and like counts can fall after a purchase.

Every quarter, Meta’s Community Standards Enforcement Report gives the number of fake Facebook accounts it took action on. TikTok removes fake likes and followers when it detects inauthentic metrics. YouTube excludes spam subscribers from channel totals, and X’s authenticity policy bans platform manipulation.

Typical signs: no profile picture, no posts, a random string for a username, thousands of accounts followed, and no interaction with anything you post.

Tip: before ordering, ask a seller what happens when delivered accounts are removed, whether a refill covers it, and for how long. A vague answer is your answer.

Collab post

An Instagram post or reel co-authored by two or more accounts. It appears on each collaborator's profile and in their followers' feeds while sharing one set of likes, comments and views, so a single post reaches several audiences at once.

You invite collaborators while creating the post, and each one has to accept. Instagram’s Reels guide says you can invite up to five. Counts are combined, so every profile shows the same post totals.

Collabs tend to work well between accounts with overlapping but different audiences: a café and a local photographer, a trainer and a nutrition coach.

Tip: if one partner paid or gifted the other, label the post as an ad. Disclosure rules in the US, UK, EU and Australia treat gifts as payment, and regulators have named vague tags such as #collab as not enough on their own.

Guide: how to get more instagram followersGuide: influencer disclosure rules by country

Comments

Written replies people leave under a post or video. A comment takes more effort than a tap, so platforms tend to treat it as a stronger signal than a like, and the conversation under a post often decides whether a visitor follows.

X’s published For You code weights a predicted reply at 5.0, ten times the weight of a like. TikTok lists comments among the interactions that shape recommendations, and Instagram counts them as interactions in Insights. Replies from the creator keep a thread alive.

On Socipro, comment orders come two ways: “Write them for me”, where you pick a style and can edit every line, or a list you write yourself.

Tip: pin a comment that asks a real question and answer the first replies quickly. Comments that respond to the content persuade more than generic praise.

CPM

Cost per mille: what advertisers pay for 1,000 ad impressions. On YouTube, CPM is measured before the platform's revenue share and only on views that served an ad, so it always reads higher than the RPM a creator is actually paid.

CPM is an advertiser’s number. It reflects what brands will pay to reach a particular audience, so it varies with where viewers live and what they are interested in. For a creator, CPM describes the market value of the audience, while RPM describes the payout.

AIR Media-Tech’s 2025–26 data shows the gap in practice: Gadgets & Tech channels in its sample had a median Studio CPM of $5.73 but a median RPM of $2.33, because only about a third of views in that niche served an ad.

Tip: when CPM looks healthy but RPM is low, check how many of your views are monetized and whether mid-roll ad slots are switched on.

Creator Rewards Program

TikTok's program that pays eligible creators for original videos at least one minute long, based on qualified For You feed views and a variable rate per 1,000 of them (RPM). Joining requires age 18 or older, 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days.

Qualified views are unique For You views watched for more than 5 seconds, excluding paid, promoted, artificial and fraudulent ones, and a video starts earning at 1,000 of them. RPM moves with watch time, search value, location, engagement and advertising value. An Additional Reward goes to videos TikTok judges well-crafted, engaging and specialized.

Only personal accounts can join, and remixes such as Duets, Stitches or reuploads with small edits aren’t treated as original. Payment arrives on the 15th once the balance reaches $10.

Tip: keep bought views and followers off any account in the program. TikTok lists both as grounds for removal.

Drip-feed

A delivery option that spreads an order over several days instead of sending it all at once. It changes when the followers or subscribers arrive, not what is delivered, so a count rises at a pace closer to everyday growth.

Socipro orders are delivered gradually by default rather than all at once; there is no separate pace setting to choose, and the order page shows progress as it arrives.

Spreading delivery doesn’t make bought followers invisible to a platform, and no seller can honestly claim it does. What it avoids is a sudden jump that looks odd next to your usual numbers.

Tip: match the pace to how you normally grow. An account that gains a handful of followers a day suits a week-long pace better than a single day.

Duet and Stitch

Two TikTok remix tools. A Duet plays your video side by side with another creator's; a Stitch opens with a short clip from someone else's video and continues with your own response. Both credit the original creator.

Creators can turn Duet and Stitch off for their own videos in privacy settings. Both formats let you join a conversation that is already drawing views, which makes them a quick way to show your take to an existing audience.

They have one big limit: TikTok’s Creator Rewards Program doesn’t count Duets or Stitches as original content, so they earn no rewards. Videos that only reuse other people’s material with little added can also be kept out of the For You feed.

Tip: use a Stitch to answer a question or add expertise in your own voice, then point viewers to a full original video on the same topic.

Engagement rate

A ratio of interactions to audience: likes, comments, saves and shares divided by followers, reach or views, then multiplied by 100. No platform publishes an official formula, so a rate only means something when you say which denominator produced it.

On Instagram, the usual public version divides likes and comments by followers, and your Insights add saves, shares and viewers for a fuller picture. On TikTok, benchmark studies mostly divide by views, since most views come from the For You feed rather than from followers. YouTube and X show interactions in their analytics but publish no target rate.

Tip: choose one formula and keep it. Score each new post against your own median over the last 20 or so posts, and leave out posts that had paid promotion or bought engagement so the baseline stays honest.

Explore

Instagram's discovery tab: a grid of photos, carousels and reels from accounts you don't follow, picked from your past activity. Landing in Explore is one of the main routes for an Instagram post to reach new people.

Explore runs its own ranking system, separate from Feed, Stories and Reels. Meta publishes a system card for it explaining that it gathers candidate posts related to what you’ve engaged with, then orders them by how likely you are to interact.

Instagram’s recommendation guidelines apply here. Accounts that break them, or that mainly repost other people’s work, can be left out of Explore while still reaching their own followers. Since April 2026 that rule covers photos and carousels as well as reels.

Tip: original posts people save or send to a friend are the ones Explore keeps picking up. Check your Insights to see how many viewers came from outside your followers.

Follower drop

A fall in follower count after growth, caused by unfollows, deactivated or deleted accounts, or a platform removing fake and inauthentic follows. Some loss happens on every account; a sudden drop usually has a specific cause you can trace.

Since November 2018, Instagram has been stripping out follows, likes and comments generated by third-party growth apps, and it hides the activity of people who deactivate until they log back in. YouTube leaves closed accounts and spam subscribers out of your count. TikTok’s Creator Academy notes that losing some followers after a viral video is common.

Bought followers fall away more than earned ones, because platforms filter them over time.

Tip: on Instagram, Insights shows followers gained and lost once you pass 100 followers; match the dates of drops to what you posted. On Socipro, Premium follower orders include a refill window for drops after delivery.

For You page

TikTok's main recommendation feed, also called the For You feed or FYP. It gives each viewer a personalized stream of videos chosen from their own activity, which is how a video reaches people who have never seen its creator before.

According to TikTok, the feed estimates the odds that you’ll like, share, comment on, finish or skip each video, and that your interactions, time spent watching included, weigh more than video or device details. It has also said follower count and past hits are not direct factors.

Some videos are kept out entirely: content from accounts under 16, unoriginal reuploads, and posts that fall under the For You eligibility standards. When that happens, the post’s analytics name the reason and offer an appeal.

Tip: if a video stalls at a few hundred views, open its analytics and look for an ineligibility notice before you delete or repost anything.

Hashtag

A word or phrase after a # symbol that labels a post's topic and makes it findable on search and tag pages. Hashtags describe what content is about; on Instagram they no longer widen reach on their own, and a caption is capped at five.

Instagram began limiting captions to five hashtags per reel or post in December 2025, and its head has said hashtags don’t increase reach, though they help signal what a post covers. On X, related hashtags are bundled into one trend, and post volume alone doesn’t decide what trends. On TikTok, tags sit in the caption next to the words people type into search.

Tip: use a few specific tags that describe the post, and write the caption in the words your audience would search for. A long list of generic tags adds clutter and nothing else.

Guide: how x trending topics workService: buy twitter trend topic

Hook

The opening seconds of a video, or the first line of a post, built to make people stop scrolling and keep watching. A strong hook states the payoff or raises a question at once; a weak one loses viewers before the point arrives.

Hooks matter because short-video feeds measure attention from the first second. TikTok’s Creator Academy suggests finding the moment viewers stopped watching, and the first question it asks is whether the video was missing a hook. In Creator Rewards, a view only qualifies after more than 5 seconds of watching, so the opening also decides what earns.

Common openings: show the result first, name the problem, make a bold but true claim, or start mid-action.

Tip: write three hooks for every video and film the one you would stop for yourself. Check the retention curve afterward to see whether it worked.

Guide: how tiktok algorithm worksGuide: how instagram reels algorithm worksFree tool: tiktok engagement rate calculator

Impressions

How many times content appeared on someone's screen, repeat appearances to the same person included. Impressions measure exposure rather than attention, so they always run at or above reach, and advertisers use them to price ads per thousand.

The word shifts by platform. X’s API reports impression_count: every time a post was displayed on someone’s screen. On YouTube, impressions are how often your thumbnails were shown, and click-through rate is the share of those showings that became views. Instagram moved to Views as its primary metric across formats in August 2024, so older guides that talk about Instagram impressions describe a number you will no longer find in the same place.

Tip: read impressions next to reach. If impressions climb while reach stays flat, the same people are seeing you again and again, and new viewers aren’t arriving.

Guide: x views and impressionsFree tool: youtube money calculator

Inauthentic engagement

Likes, follows, views, comments or shares that don't come from genuine interest, such as activity from bots, paid services or follow-for-follow schemes. Every major platform prohibits it, removes what it detects and can limit the accounts involved.

Meta’s spam policy bans buying, selling or exchanging likes, follows, views and shares. TikTok’s Community Guidelines don’t allow the trade of services that artificially boost engagement. YouTube’s fake engagement policy covers anything that artificially increases views, likes or comments, and X bans follow churn.

Consequences range from removed counts to fewer recommendations, lost monetization or account bans. In the US, a 2024 FTC rule adds legal risk: buying fake indicators of influence to misstate it for business purposes is unlawful.

Tip: if you buy engagement at all, know the rules first, keep it away from monetized accounts, and never use it to mislead customers or advertisers.

Guide: is buying instagram followers safeGuide: is buying tiktok followers safeGuide: youtube policy on buying subscribers

Likes

A one-tap reaction showing that someone enjoyed a post. Likes are the most common interaction on every platform and the largest part of most engagement rates. Instagram names likes among its top three ranking signals, while X weights a like below a repost or reply.

Instagram’s head said in January 2025 that likes count slightly more for reaching followers, and sends for reaching non-followers. Instagram has let every user hide the like count on their own posts since May 2021. TikTok lists likes among For You signals, and on LIVE, likes are free taps that feed into the LIVE feed. On X, the published code gives a like a weight of 0.5, half a repost.

Tip: watch likes per reach rather than total likes. A post seen by fewer people can still be liked by a bigger share of them, and that is the one to learn from.

Guide: instagram followers vs likesFree tool: instagram engagement rate calculatorService: buy instagram likes

LIVE gifts

Virtual items viewers buy with TikTok Coins and send to a host during a LIVE stream. The host receives Diamonds, awarded according to how popular the stream is, which can be turned into earnings. Sending or receiving gifts requires age 18, or 19 in South Korea.

Gifts are also a recommendation signal: TikTok lists the number of gifts among the details it uses to suggest streams in the LIVE feed. Accounts belonging to governments, politicians and political parties are excluded from collecting Diamonds. A related feature, Video Gifts, lets viewers send gifts on regular videos to eligible creators.

TikTok’s guidelines make content that manipulates people into gifting ineligible for the For You feed, so a gift goal should read as a thank-you, not a demand.

Tip: thank each gifter by name on stream. It costs nothing and gives the rest of the room a reason to stay.

Niche

The specific topic and audience an account focuses on, such as vegan baking, budget travel or indie game reviews. A clear niche helps recommendation systems match posts to interested viewers and helps people decide quickly whether to follow.

Niche also shapes income. In AIR Media-Tech’s YouTube data for 2025–26, Education & Science had a median RPM of $10.22 and Kids & Teens $0.33, yet the spread inside a niche was often wider than the gap between niches. TikTok’s Creator Rewards gives an Additional Reward to specialized videos that focus on a theme or area of expertise.

A niche isn’t a cage. Most growing accounts post around one core subject with a few related angles.

Tip: describe your niche in one sentence in your bio. If you can’t, a visitor won’t be able to either.

Guide: how to get more instagram followersFree tool: youtube money calculatorGuide: tiktok pay per 1000 views

Private account

An account whose posts only approved followers can see. Visitors see the name and profile picture but not the content, and every new follower must be accepted. Most growth orders can't be delivered to a private account because nothing on it is reachable from outside.

On Instagram, accounts of users under 18 are private by default, and business profiles can’t be made private without first switching back to a personal account. A private account’s posts don’t appear to people who haven’t been approved.

Socipro checks the profile or link before payment and flags a private account, so you can switch it to public first. Keep it public until the order completes, and for Premium orders through the refill window, or neither delivery nor a refill can reach it.

Tip: if you want privacy for personal posts, keep a separate personal account and grow a public one.

Guide: how our link check worksRead more: how it works

Reach

The number of unique accounts that saw a piece of content at least once. Reach counts each person a single time however often they watched, which is why it is lower than views. Instagram now shows this figure as Viewers in Insights.

Meta defines Viewers as unique accounts that had your content on screen at least once; for reels, that holds whether or not the reel actually played. Views, by contrast, add up every play or display, repeats included.

Reach is the fairer denominator for judging a single post, because it only includes people who were actually shown it. High reach with few interactions means the post was shown widely and didn’t land. Low reach with strong interactions means it may only need more distribution.

Tip: Insights splits accounts engaged into followers and non-followers for posts, stories and live. A rising non-follower share means a post is traveling.

Guide: what counts as an instagram viewGuide: instagram engagement rate

Reels

Instagram's short vertical video format, with music, effects and editing tools built in. Reels show in their own tab, in Feed and in Explore, and can be recommended to people who don't follow you, which makes them Instagram's main format for reaching new viewers.

Reels can run up to three minutes, a limit Instagram raised in January 2025. Views count every play and replay, Viewers counts unique accounts, and average watch time shows whether people stayed past the opening.

In January 2025, Adam Mosseri listed watch time, likes and sends as the three signals that matter most. Trial reels let professional accounts show a reel to non-followers first and decide afterward whether followers see it.

Tip: open on the most interesting frame and post your own footage. Accounts that mainly reuse other people’s clips can lose eligibility for recommendations.

Refill

A free top-up a seller adds when a delivered count falls below what you ordered, within a set window after the order completes. A refill replaces followers, likes or subscribers that were removed or unfollowed; it doesn't stop drops from happening.

On Socipro, refill comes with the Premium tier on services where drops can be measured, such as followers, subscribers and likes. The window starts when the order completes, and each service page shows its length. Ask for one from your order page; we check today’s count against the number logged when the order finished.

The target must still be public under the same username or link. Quality orders have no refill, and neither do views, comments, shares, live or trend services.

Tip: refill and refund are different things. Anything not delivered during the order is refunded automatically; refill covers drops after completion.

Guide: refill explainedGuide: quality vs premiumRead more: refund

Repost

Resharing someone else's post to your own followers, with credit to the original creator. On X, a repost (formerly a retweet) sends the post to all of the reposter's followers. Instagram added reposts for public reels and feed posts in August 2025.

On Instagram, reposts sit in their own tab on your profile, may be recommended to your followers, and can’t be reposted a second time. Creators decide whether others may repost their content. On X, the published For You code weights a predicted repost at 1.0 against 0.5 for a like, which is one reason reposts travel further. Quote posts, which add your own words on top, are tallied on their own.

Tip: a repost lends your account’s credibility to someone else’s work. Keep reposts close to your topic so your profile stays clear about what you post.

Guide: instagram reposts explainedGuide: x reposts vs likesService: buy instagram reposts

Retention

The share of viewers still watching at each moment of a video, usually drawn as a curve in analytics. Retention shows exactly where people lost interest, which makes it more useful for editing than a single average watch time figure.

TikTok’s Creator Academy calls retention rate the first metric to watch, ahead of likes, comments and shares. It suggests rewatching the moment most viewers left and asking whether the hook was missing, the edit messy or the video simply not engaging enough. YouTube Studio shows a similar audience retention curve for every video.

Reading the curve: a steep fall in the first seconds points to a weak opening or a thumbnail that promised something else. A slow, steady slope is normal. A bump means people rewound to see a moment again.

Tip: lay the curves of your strongest and weakest video from the same month side by side.

Guide: how tiktok algorithm worksFree tool: tiktok engagement rate calculator

RPM

Revenue per mille: what a creator earns per 1,000 views after the platform takes its share. YouTube calculates it across all revenue sources and all views; TikTok's Creator Rewards applies it per 1,000 qualified views. It is the right number for income estimates.

On YouTube, RPM includes ads, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, divided by every view, including views that showed no ad. That is why it sits below CPM. In AIR Media-Tech’s sample of 300 channels for May 2025 to May 2026, the median long-form RPM was about $2.30.

On TikTok, RPM applies only to qualified For You views and moves with watch time, search value, location, engagement and ad value. TikTok publishes no standard rate.

Tip: use your own RPM from YouTube Studio or the Creator Rewards dashboard. A rate quoted online describes someone else’s audience.

Free tool: youtube money calculatorFree tool: tiktok money calculatorGuide: tiktok pay per 1000 views

Save

Bookmarking a post to come back to later. Instagram keeps saves in the user's own collections and TikTok puts them in Favorites. Creators see how many saves a post collected, and a high save count marks content people find useful.

Instagram Insights counts saves as interactions alongside likes, comments and shares. On TikTok, a saved video lands in the viewer’s Favorites (also shown as Saved), where it can be filed into collections. Neither platform publishes how much a save weighs in ranking.

Saves suit content people return to: recipes, workouts, checklists, tutorials, products to compare later.

Tip: watch saves per reach rather than raw saves. A post saved by a large share of its viewers is doing a different job from one with plenty of likes and no saves, and it usually keeps earning views for longer.

Guide: tiktok saves vs sharesService: buy tiktok saves

Shadowban

An informal name for content that quietly stops being recommended to non-followers while the account otherwise works normally. Platforms don't use the word, but Instagram and TikTok both describe limits on recommendation eligibility and show some of them in the app.

On Instagram, Account Status lists removed content and features you can no longer use, and the recommendations help page explains that content from accounts that don’t meet the recommendation guidelines may not be suggested to others. On TikTok, a video that isn’t eligible for the For You feed shows the reason in its analytics, with an option to appeal.

Many apparent shadowbans are simply weaker posts: views fall because early viewers swiped away, not because of a penalty.

Tip: check Account Status or the video’s analytics first. If nothing is flagged, study retention before assuming you’ve been restricted.

Guide: tiktok views stuck at 200Guide: is buying instagram followers safe

Shares and sends

A share passes a post on to someone else, inside the app or outside it; Instagram calls a share by direct message a send. Shares put content in front of people who don't follow you, so platforms treat them as a strong sign a post deserves wider distribution.

In January 2025, Instagram’s head put sends in the top three ranking signals and said they carry a little more weight than likes when a post is shown to non-followers. TikTok lists shares among the interactions that shape the For You feed. X’s published code weights a predicted share by DM at 5.0 and a share by copied link at 20.0, against 0.5 for a like.

Instagram Insights counts shares as interactions, next to likes, comments and saves.

Tip: track sends per reach (shares divided by viewers). Make posts someone forwards to one specific friend: a tip they need, a joke they’ll get, a plan to make together.

Guide: instagram shares and sendsGuide: tiktok saves vs sharesService: buy instagram shares

Social proof

The tendency to judge something by how other people have responded to it. On social media, visible counts such as views, likes and followers work as social proof, shaping whether a new visitor stops, watches or follows.

A new account with good work still starts at zero, and the numbers on screen are often the first thing a viewer reads. That is the fair case for a small first push: giving a launch, a release or a new series a first look while real viewers arrive.

Social proof has legal limits. In the US, 16 CFR 465.8 prohibits buying fake signs of social media influence to misrepresent it for commercial purposes, and consumer rules in the UK, EU and Australia ban misleading people. Inflated numbers should never be used to sell to customers or advertisers.

Tip: comments that respond to the content say more to a visitor than a bare count.

Guide: instagram followers vs likesGuide: influencer disclosure rules by countryService: buy instagram likes

Subscribers

People who follow a YouTube channel to see its new videos in their Subscriptions feed. The subscriber count is a channel's headline number and a Partner Program requirement, but it doesn't promise views: each video still has to earn its audience.

The public count is shortened as it grows: from 1,000 it updates in steps of 10, from 10,000 in steps of 100, and so on, while YouTube Studio shows the exact figure. Closed accounts and spam subscribers, including ones bought from third-party services, don’t count toward the total.

Milestones: 500 for fan funding (with watch hours or Shorts views), 1,000 for the Partner Program, and 100,000 to apply for a verification badge.

Tip: ask for the subscribe once a video has delivered something, not in the opening seconds, when a viewer has no reason yet.

TikTok LIVE

TikTok's live-streaming feature, where a creator broadcasts in real time while viewers comment, like and send gifts. As of October 2026, hosts must be at least 18 and have 1,000 followers, though TikTok notes the follower number may vary by region.

Streams reach followers and a separate LIVE feed. For that feed, TikTok considers a stream’s views, likes, gifts and the host’s follower count, and weighs viewer interactions such as watch time most heavily. You can schedule a stream as a LIVE Event so viewers register and get a reminder, and replays stay available for 30 days.

Static, unattended or looped streams, and streams that pressure viewers into gifting, can lose monetization or For You eligibility.

Tip: go live at the same time every week and greet early commenters by name. A room that talks gets recommended more than a quiet one.

Guide: how to go live on tiktokGuide: tiktok live first 100 viewersService: buy tiktok live viewers

Username (handle)

The unique name that identifies an account, written after an @ sign and used in its profile web address. It differs from the display name, which can contain spaces and needn't be unique. A follower order only needs the username.

YouTube calls it a handle and shows it on the channel page and beside comments. Changing a username changes the profile address, so older links to your profile may break. On YouTube, a verified channel keeps its badge when the handle changes but loses it when the channel name changes.

For an order, the username is all we need: we look up the public profile and show it to you before you pay. We never ask for login details.

Tip: if you plan to rename, do it before ordering or after the refill window ends. A refill needs the same username as the original order.

Read more: how it worksGuide: how our link check worksService: buy tiktok followers

Verified badge

A check mark beside an account name showing that the platform has confirmed the account belongs to who it claims to be. It confirms identity, not quality or popularity, and on some platforms it now comes through a paid subscription.

On YouTube, a channel can apply for verification once it reaches 100,000 subscribers, with 2-step verification on and a complete profile; YouTube may also verify well-known channels with fewer. Verified channels get no extra features, and changing the channel name removes the badge, while changing the handle doesn’t. On Instagram and Facebook, Meta Verified is a paid subscription that checks a government ID.

Tip: no seller can get you verified, and a follower order doesn’t change the rules. Treat anyone offering a badge for a fee outside the platform’s own app as a scam.

Guide: get 1000 youtube subscribersGuide: youtube policy on buying subscribers

Views

A count of how often a video or post was played or shown. Every platform tallies them differently: Instagram counts each start and replay, YouTube counts a view when playback begins, X counts views by logged-in users, and TikTok pays creators on a stricter qualified view.

  • Instagram: a reel view counts each time it starts to play or replays; photos and carousels count each time they are displayed.
  • TikTok: the public counter isn’t what Creator Rewards pays on. Creator Rewards only pays on qualified views: one per viewer, from the For You feed, after more than 5 seconds of watching.
  • YouTube: since August 24, 2026, a view counts when playback starts, and YouTube may freeze or correct the number while it checks legitimacy.
  • X: total views by logged-in users, including repeats and the author’s own.

Tip: the public count is always the most generous one. For money or eligibility, use the stricter figure in each platform’s analytics.

Guide: what counts as an instagram viewGuide: how youtube counts viewsGuide: x views and impressions

Watch time

The total time viewers spend watching your videos, or the average per view. Platforms read it as one of the clearest signs that a video held attention, and YouTube uses watch hours as a Partner Program entry requirement.

YouTube counts qualified public watch hours from long-form videos toward the Partner Program; time spent in the Shorts feed doesn’t count toward the 4,000-hour bar. TikTok says interactions, time spent watching included, generally weigh more than video details in For You recommendations, and its Creator Rewards RPM factors in average watch time and finish rate. Instagram’s head named watch time first among its top three ranking signals in January 2025.

Instagram works out a reel’s average watch time by dividing total time watched by initial plays.

Tip: find the second where viewers leave, then cut or tighten that part in your next video.

Guide: get 1000 youtube subscribersGuide: how instagram reels algorithm worksGuide: how tiktok algorithm works

YouTube Partner Program

YouTube's program (YPP) that lets channels share in ad and Premium revenue and use fan funding. As of October 2026, a channel qualifies for ad revenue with 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours over a year or 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days.

A lower tier opens fan funding, Creator Partnerships and Shopping at 500 subscribers with 3,000 qualified watch hours in a year or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days. Once accepted, creators keep 55% of net ad revenue on long-form Watch Page videos and 45% of their Shorts Creator Pool allocation.

From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Channels already in the program keep their status.

Tip: applications are reviewed by people as well as automated systems, and spam subscribers don’t count toward the 1,000.

Guide: get 1000 youtube subscribersGuide: youtube policy on buying subscribersFree tool: youtube money calculator

YouTube Shorts

YouTube's vertical short-video format, up to three minutes long, watched in the swipeable Shorts feed. Shorts have their own view rules, their own route into the Partner Program and a pooled revenue model kept separate from long-form videos.

Monetized creators earn from a monthly Creator Pool and keep 45% of their allocated share, compared with 55% of net ad revenue on long-form Watch Page videos. Shorts alone can get a channel into the Partner Program (1,000 subscribers plus 10 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days), but watch time in the Shorts feed never counts toward the 4,000 long-form hours.

From February 1, 2027, earning from the Creator Pool in a month requires 10 million qualified Shorts views over the previous 90 days, and new Partner Program applicants on the Shorts route need 20 million.

Tip: use Shorts to bring new viewers in, and long-form videos to earn from them.
