The short answer

To join the YouTube Partner Program you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views instead. Subscribers YouTube flags as spam don't count.

Key facts

  • YPP today: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days (YouTube Help, checked October 9, 2026).
  • From February 1, 2027, new applicants need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, still with 1,000 subscribers.
  • Fan funding, Creator Partnerships and Shopping stay at 500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours in a year or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days.
  • Mobile live streaming needs 50 subscribers; below 1,000, YouTube may limit the audience of mobile streams.
  • Subscribers gained through artificial means, such as purchases from a third-party service, are removed from your count.

What does 1,000 subscribers open up on YouTube?

1,000 is the number everyone talks about, but it isn’t the first milestone or the only one. YouTube’s help center sets out a ladder, and it is worth knowing where each step sits before you plan. Thresholds below were checked on October 9, 2026. And if you came here wondering whether to buy YouTube subscribers to get over the line, the answer for the Partner Program is no; the reasons are further down.

Subscribers What opens up Other conditions
50 Live streaming from your phone Verified channel, no live restrictions in the past 90 days; audience may be limited below 1,000
500 Fan funding (memberships, Super Chat and similar), Creator Partnerships, YouTube Shopping 3,000 qualified watch hours in a year or 3 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days
1,000 YouTube Partner Program with ad revenue 4,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days
1,000 (from Feb 1, 2027, new applicants) Same 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days

Every YPP applicant also needs 2-Step Verification on the Google Account, an AdSense for YouTube account, no active Community Guidelines strikes, advanced features access, and to live in a country where the program is available.

What changes on February 1, 2027?

YouTube announced three updates to YPP that start on that date. The one that matters for this guide is the entry bar. New applicants will need double the watch hours (8,000 in 365 days) or double the Shorts views (20 million in 90 days). The 1,000-subscriber requirement doesn’t move.

Two other points from the same announcement:

  • If you’re already in YPP, your status isn’t affected by the new thresholds. You do need to accept the updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to keep full monetization.
  • Shorts earnings get their own floor. To earn from the Shorts Creator Pool each month, a monetizing channel will need 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days. Missing it doesn’t remove you from YPP.

So if you are close to the current bar, timing matters. YouTube’s help center says that once a channel has met the threshold and applied, it is reviewed even if its counts dip while it waits. The announcement doesn’t spell out how applications still in the queue on February 1 are handled, so the cautious move is to apply as soon as you qualify.

What counts as “qualified”?

YouTube added the word on purpose. Qualified watch hours come only from public long-form videos. Hours from private, unlisted or deleted videos, ad campaigns, Shorts, and live streams that are unlisted, deleted or not converted to regular videos don’t count. Qualified Shorts views come only from public Shorts in the Shorts Feed. Views from ad campaigns and image posts don’t count. Our guide on Shorts versus long-form views explains why the two paths behave so differently.

Watch hours or Shorts views: which path is shorter?

Turn the thresholds into daily numbers and the choice gets clearer. These are plain arithmetic on YouTube’s published figures.

Path Threshold Window What it works out to
Long-form, today 4,000 qualified watch hours 12 months 240,000 minutes, or about 660 minutes a day
Shorts, today 10 million qualified Shorts views 90 days about 111,000 views a day
Long-form, from Feb 1, 2027 8,000 qualified watch hours 365 days 480,000 minutes, or about 1,315 minutes a day
Shorts, from Feb 1, 2027 20 million qualified Shorts views 90 days about 222,000 views a day

For most small channels, long-form is the steadier route. A 12-minute video watched halfway by 110 people a day gets you to the current watch-hour bar in a year. The Shorts route needs a reach that few new channels have, and it resets every 90 days. Shorts are still worth making, as step 3 below explains, because they bring new people to the long videos that build hours.

How do you actually get to 1,000 subscribers?

There is no trick that YouTube rewards, but there is a method that works for most channels. Here it is as a sequence.

  1. Pick a subject you can make 30 videos about. Subscribing is a bet on future videos. People subscribe when they can see the next ten coming.
  2. Make each video answer one search. Titles that match what people type (“how to fix a squeaky door hinge”) keep finding viewers for months.
  3. Use Shorts as the trailer, not the show. A Short can reach people who have never seen you. End it by pointing to the long video that goes deeper.
  4. Ask for the subscribe once, at the right moment. YouTube’s fake engagement policy explicitly allows you to encourage viewers to subscribe. Do it after you’ve delivered something, not in the first ten seconds.
  5. Go live once you pass 50 subscribers. Mobile streams open at 50. Live chats turn viewers into regulars, and regulars subscribe. Our guide to getting viewers on YouTube live covers the first streams.
  6. Reply to every comment for the first months. It’s slow, and it’s the main thing small channels can do that big ones can’t.
  7. Look at the videos that already brought subscribers. YouTube Analytics shows growth over time. Make more of what worked.

One habit to avoid: “sub4sub” swaps, where channels agree to subscribe to each other. YouTube’s fake engagement policy names them as not allowed.

Can you buy your way to 1,000 subscribers?

Not to the Partner Program, and we say that as a company that sells subscribers.

YouTube’s subscriber help page says it regularly verifies accounts and actions on your channel. Spam subscribers, defined as subscribers gained through artificial means “such as purchasing subscribers through a third-party service”, don’t count toward your total and don’t appear in your subscriber list. The fake engagement policy adds that anything that artificially inflates metrics isn’t allowed, and that if you hire someone to promote your channel, their methods can affect your channel too. The YPP review itself is done by automated systems and human reviewers looking at the channel as a whole.

So if the goal is monetization, buying subscribers works against you. Our longer guide on what YouTube’s rules say about buying subscribers goes through the enforcement steps.

When does a paid order make sense? For a new channel that doesn’t want its first visitors to see zero, or a launch where you want the first video to look like it belongs to a channel someone cares about. If that is your situation, a Socipro subscriber order needs only your public channel link. Your subscriber count must be public so we can check delivery, and Premium includes a refill window. Keep it modest and keep it away from the YPP threshold.

How long does the YPP review take after you hit 1,000?

YouTube says to expect a decision in about one month after you accept the terms and link AdSense, with possible delays when application volumes are high. Some channels get multiple reviews when reviewers disagree.

If you’re rejected, you can appeal within 21 days, or reapply after 30 days. After a second rejection, the wait is 90 days. YouTube also notes it may turn off monetization on channels that haven’t uploaded or posted in six months or more, so reaching the bar is the start, not the finish.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need 1,000 subscribers or 4,000 hours first?

You need both, in either order. The 1,000 subscribers is fixed, and the second requirement is either 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Subscribers don't expire, but watch hours and Shorts views are rolling windows, so they can fall away if you stop posting.

Will the February 2027 YPP change affect my channel?

Only if you aren't in the program yet. YouTube says creators already in YPP keep their status. New applicants from February 1, 2027 need 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, plus 1,000 subscribers. Existing members must accept updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027.

Why does my subscriber count show 1.2K instead of the exact number?

YouTube shortens public counts once you pass 1,000 subscribers. Between 1,000 and 9,999, the number shown updates every 10 new subscribers, so 1,234 appears as 1.23K. Your exact figure is in YouTube Studio under Analytics, in the Realtime card. The YPP check uses YouTube's own count, not the rounded one.

What happens if I drop below 1,000 after applying?

Your application still gets reviewed. YouTube says that once you've met the threshold and applied, a drop in subscribers or watch hours while you wait doesn't stop the review. Changing videos to private or deleting them can affect the application, though, and channels that break the monetization policies lose eligibility whatever their counts. Track the status in the Earn section of YouTube Studio.
