Instagram and TikTok in Lyon: what works

December is Lyon’s month. The Fête des Lumières runs over four evenings around December 8; the 2025 edition ran from Friday, December 5 to Monday, December 8, with free entry and, for the first time, a drone light show. Crowds pack the center on all four nights, and every phone in the Presqu’île points at the same facades, so useful posts beat beautiful ones: which installations are worth the queue, when the crowds thin out, where to eat between two sites.

In May, the city turns to electronic music. Nuits sonores ran its 23rd edition from May 13 to 17, 2026, with daytime parties at the Grandes Locos in La Mulatière and night programs at La Sucrière, Le Sucre and Azar Club in Confluence. For DJs, labels, promoters and photographers, this is the week when the people who book shows are paying attention.

January is for chefs. Sirha Lyon, the food-service trade show at Eurexpo, returns from January 21 to 25, 2027, and hosts the 40th Bocuse d’Or final alongside the Pastry World Cup. It is trade-only, so most people never see inside. A cook or a supplier who films the competition kitchens gives food audiences something genuinely new.

The rest of the year runs on food. Bouchons in the Presqu’île and Vieux Lyon, the market halls, and newer restaurants in the 7th and Croix-Rousse give restaurant accounts a steady supply of things to film. Short videos of one dish being plated, with the street name in the caption, tend to get saved by people planning a weekend.

Neighborhoods change the tone. Croix-Rousse is ateliers, slopes and a village feel. Guillotière is mixed, young and full of cheap eats. Confluence is new architecture, offices and the music venues. Pick the one your buyers live in.

Start timing tests around meals: late morning and early evening for food, later for music. Give each slot two weeks.

Who orders from Lyon

A bouchon owner in Croix-Rousse wants to reach younger diners. He films a series showing one traditional dish each week and adds Instagram views to the first episode, so the series reaches more than his regulars, then uses saves and booking messages to decide which dishes to feature on Fridays.

A DJ duo playing a side event during Nuits sonores posts a short set clip every evening of the festival. They order TikTok views on the first clip, so it gets enough plays to show whether house or techno edits hold viewers, and plan their autumn mixes around the result.

A pastry student heading to Sirha as a volunteer starts a YouTube channel about competition training. She orders a few YouTube views on her first full practice session, so it has some watch time to learn from, then checks where viewers drop off before editing the next one.

Rules to know before you post ads

Under the June 2023 law on commercial influence, a sponsored post in France must say “Publicité” or “Collaboration commerciale” clearly, for the whole duration of the image or video. If a restaurant invites you for a free meal in return for a post, plan for the label. Separately, EU law forbids using fake endorsements to sell, so a restaurant should never present ordered likes as diners’ verdict. Our France page has the official text and more detail.

Lyon FAQ

Timing, events and ordering for accounts in Lyon.

When should I post about the Fête des Lumières?

Before it, to help people plan, and on the night of December 8. The festival runs over four evenings around that date; in 2025 it was December 5 to 8, with free entry and a first drone light show. Maps of quieter routes and the hours of each installation get saved. Crowd shots alone get scrolled past.

Do Lyon restaurants need TikTok or just Instagram?

Instagram usually comes first for reservations, because people check menus, photos and opening hours there. TikTok is where a single dish or a chef's technique can reach people outside your neighborhood. Start with Instagram, add short TikTok clips of one plate being made, and watch which platform sends more booking messages.

Is Sirha worth covering for a food account?

Yes, if your audience cares about chefs and competition. Sirha Lyon is a trade show at Eurexpo, and its next edition runs January 21 to 25, 2027, with the Bocuse d'Or final, founded in 1987, on the last two days. Entry is for trade visitors only, so posts that show what happens inside are rare.

What time do Lyon audiences scroll?

Test around meals; it is a food city. Late morning before lunch and early evening before dinner are worth trying for restaurant posts, and a later evening slot suits music and nightlife accounts. Keep each slot for two weeks in French time, then compare reach and saves in your analytics before you settle.

Can a bouchon or small restaurant in Lyon order Reel views?

Yes. A restaurant's Reel is an ordinary order: paste the public link, pick Quality or Premium, and pay. Lyon food accounts compete with many near-identical plates, so a first audience helps you see which dish or angle holds attention. If a supplier pays you to feature their product, label the post under the French influencer law.
