Why followers matter for France accounts

French social habits split in two. DataReportal’s latest figures give Snapchat a slightly larger ad audience in France than Instagram, 29.8 million against 28.2 million. When a creator wants to be found by people who do not know them yet, they move to a public Instagram profile, and that is where a follower count suddenly matters.

The switch is visible in a typical story. An illustrator in Nantes has shared drawings with friends for years, then opens a public account to show her work to galleries and readers. The posts are good. The profile, however, says twenty-three followers, and visitors who arrive from a shared Reel read that as a hobby that might not last. A starting count changes that first look, while the work itself decides whether they stay.

Follower count shows up in Instagram’s own list of popularity signals for recommending Reels to non-followers. It is a minor one next to reshares and watch time, so the plan still depends on posting regularly.

One French rule to keep in mind as the account grows: once a brand pays you or gives you something in return for a post, the 2023 influencer law applies, and the post needs « publicité » or « collaboration commerciale ». The follower count has nothing to do with that obligation, and it should never be presented to a brand as engaged readers. Our France page explains the law in more detail.
