Why followers matter for Germany accounts

Instagram in Germany is big but not dominant. DataReportal’s Digital 2026 report puts its ad reach at 31.3 million people in late 2025, 37.2 percent of the population, well behind YouTube’s 64.7 million. That shapes how creators use it: many start on Instagram with a narrow focus, such as climbing, sourdough, urban sketching or a particular football club, and grow from there.

A narrow niche means every profile visit counts. A climber posts a Reel from the Frankenjura, someone shares it, and a stranger taps through. On a profile with a few dozen followers, that stranger often leaves without following, because nothing tells them the account will still be posting next month. A starting count changes the first glance without changing anything else.

Instagram treats follower count as one of several popularity signals when it recommends Reels to people who do not follow you yet. It is not the main one. Reshares, watch time and likes on the Reel itself weigh more, so the posts still have to do the work.

Germany adds a layer of rules that apply once a profile turns commercial. If you start selling or accepting paid partnerships, label sponsored posts as Werbung or Anzeige and check whether your profile needs an Impressum. Those rules are about what you publish. A follower order does not change them, and it does not replace honest numbers when a brand asks.
