Instagram and TikTok in Varna: what works

Varna is the largest city on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast and its third-largest overall, and people call it the country’s maritime capital. Its summer season runs from early May to early October, which is long for the Black Sea, and the city draws two to three million tourists a year. The port gives the city a year-round economy. Varna grew from a Thracian settlement into a major Black Sea seaport and became the country’s principal port of export, so shipping, logistics, repair and maritime schools add a steady, working audience. Recruitment videos and behind-the-scenes clips from ships and docks hold attention because few people get to see that work.

Students are the third group. Varna was European Youth Capital in 2017, its universities include the country’s oldest higher-education institution outside Sofia, and its medical university attracts a large share of the city’s foreign students. They stay through winter, follow food, fitness and nightlife accounts, and many of them follow English-language accounts.

A boat-trip operator at the marina launches a TikTok account in April. A saxophonist who plays sunset sets in Golden Sands tries live streaming for the first time. For the first weekends she orders TikTok live viewers for the opening minutes, so each stream has a fair chance to be found, and watches which songs make viewers stay longest.

An international medical student starts a YouTube channel about studying in Varna. She orders YouTube views on her first video, so it has enough watch time to learn from, and plans the next episodes around the questions future students ask in the comments.

Rules to know before you post ads

Hotels and bars in Varna often offer creators free stays or drinks for a post. Under EU consumer law, applied in Bulgaria, a promotion paid for in money or in kind has to be identifiable as such.
