The Hague has two audiences that rarely overlap, and the best accounts pick one. The first is the political and international city. The municipality’s newsroom says around 500 international institutions and organizations are based here, among them the International Court of Justice at the Peace Palace and the International Criminal Court, providing more than 20,000 jobs. Staff, interns and students at those bodies read English by default, follow policy, law and expat life, and move between X, LinkedIn and Instagram. The second is the seaside city: Scheveningen, with its beach and a pier that has a Ferris wheel above the sea, restaurants and shops, plus surfers, bakers and cafes.
The national calendar fits both. Prinsjesdag falls on the third Tuesday of September. In 2026 it was 15 September, when the King traveled through the city in a parade, delivered the Speech from the Throne and the royal family appeared on the balcony of Paleis Noordeinde, with a music evening called PrinsjesNach the night before. Commentary, explainers and photos fill timelines for the whole day. The next one comes in September 2027, and accounts that prepare a plain-language budget thread in advance tend to be the ones people share.
For political and policy content, X is the main platform. DataReportal counts 8.95 million people in X’s Dutch advertising audience in late 2025, and The Hague’s newsrooms, think tanks and lobbyists make it the center of that conversation. A new account in this world starts at zero, and a starting follower count lets a reader take it seriously for the first few posts. Follow it with threads that explain something clearly.
For everyone else, Instagram and TikTok work through place. Scheveningen’s boardwalk at dawn, a bakery in the center and a bike ride along the dunes are all easy to film. Tag the district, not just the city.
Timing follows Central European Time: lunch break, early evening and Sunday evening are the first slots to compare. The clocks go back on 25 October 2026. To start a new account, X followers and Instagram followers cover the first visit.
A policy newsletter. The author launches an X account to share each issue. X followers give the profile a starting count, while the thread quality decides whether policy readers stay. The count is never shown as proof of reach.
A surf school in Scheveningen. The owners film lessons and sunrise sessions for Instagram and TikTok. Instagram views give a Reel a first audience, and they judge it by booking messages.
A student film about the courts. A law student posts a short explainer on YouTube about how an international tribunal works. YouTube views stop the counter looking empty while she shares it with her class and professors.
Dutch rules require sponsored posts to be recognizable as ads at a glance, and paid political or advocacy messages should say who is behind them. The Stichting Reclame Code runs the social media advertising code, the Commissariaat voor de Media supervises registered video uploaders, and the consumer authority ACM warns against fake likes and followers that make a business seem more popular. Our Netherlands page has the details.
