Instagram and TikTok in Galway: what works
Galway has 85,910 residents at the 2022 census and punches far above that in attention. It shared the title of European Capital of Culture in 2020, was named a UNESCO City of Film in 2014, and fills its calendar with festivals. For anyone posting from here, the event calendar is the content plan.
July is the peak. The Galway Film Fleadh and the Galway International Arts Festival both run that month, and the 2026 arts festival ran from July 13 to 26. The Galway Races follow: the Summer Festival is scheduled for July 26 to August 1, 2027 at Ballybrit, with Ladies Day on Thursday, July 29. In September there is the International Oyster Festival, and in November the Cúirt literature festival and the Tulca visual arts festival. Galway’s Christmas Market in Eyre Square is expected to open in November and run to the end of December. Dates for 2027 festivals are not all announced yet, so treat the pattern as reliable and the exact days as provisional.
The geography does the rest. Salthill, the seafront promenade on Galway Bay, is the setting for walking, swimming and sunset content, and it hosts the Salthill Air Show each June. The Spanish Arch and the streets of the old center suit buskers and live-music clips. Shop Street and Quay Street have the density of cafés, record shops and bars that make good backdrops for a launch.
Language is a local asset. The city is sometimes called the Bilingual Capital of Ireland, and four of its electoral divisions are Gaeltacht areas. TG4 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta are headquartered in Connemara, elsewhere in the county. Nationally, the 2022 census counted almost 1.9 million people who could speak Irish, but only 71,968 who used it daily outside school. For most Galway posts, English will reach the most people, and an Irish line adds character. A caption with both languages, tested against an English-only version, will tell you which your audience prefers.
Seasons change who you are talking to. In term time the audience is students from the University of Galway and nearby colleges. In summer it is tourists, festival-goers and race crowds. A musician who plays the Latin Quarter all year might post at ten at night in November and at six in the evening in July. Test the lunch hour, weekday evenings and Sunday evening in Irish time, and re-test when the season turns.
Who orders from Galway
A busker or small band. A duo plays the streets around Eyre Square and posts clips of the best songs. They add TikTok views to the two strongest, then look at which song brings new followers, and use that to pick the set for the next weekend.
A film-maker with a short at the Fleadh. A graduate of the city’s film scene posts a trailer on Instagram and the film on YouTube. They order Instagram views on the trailer while the festival is running and YouTube views on the full film, and watch retention to see if the opening works.
A restaurant on Quay Street. The owner posts the weekly special as a Reel. In race week she increases the schedule, adds Instagram followers so visitors checking the handle see an established account, and sees whether the extra posts bring bookings.
Rules to know before you post ads
Irish rules treat a post as an ad if you are paid, gifted something, or promote your own business. The Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland and the CCPC ask for a clear #Ad label, with #Fogra for posts in Irish. See our Ireland page for the rule and the official guidance.
