Formula

Engagement rate = (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers × 100, using per-post averages. Saves and shares are optional: leave them empty to compare with the benchmarks below, which count likes and comments only.

## Benchmarks

*Average engagement rates by group (see sources below)*

| Account | Engagement rate | Note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Brand accounts, all post types | 0.48% | Socialinsider, 2025 data, (likes + comments) ÷ followers |
| Brand accounts, carousels | 0.55% | Socialinsider, 2025 data, same formula |
| Brand accounts, reels | 0.52% | Socialinsider, 2025 data, same formula |
| Brand accounts, single images | 0.37% | Socialinsider, 2025 data, same formula |
| Creators with about 10K followers | 2–3% good, above 3% high | HypeAuditor guideline; its formula can use views for reel-heavy accounts |

## How do you use this calculator?

1. Open your last 10 to 20 feed posts and reels. Skip anything older than three months, since your follower count was different then.
2. Add up the likes and divide by the number of posts. Do the same for comments.
3. If you run a professional account, open Insights on the same posts and average the saves and shares too.
4. Type your current follower count and the averages into the boxes. The result updates as you type.

Use averages, not your single top post. One reel that traveled far beyond your followers can double the result and hide what a normal week looks like.

## How does the formula work?

Engagement rate by followers asks one question: for every 100 people following you, how many interactions does a typical post collect? Instagram doesn’t publish an official engagement rate. Its Insights show the raw parts instead: Interactions (likes, comments, saves and shares), Viewers and Views, over any range within the past 90 days.

**Example, with hypothetical numbers.** A bakery account has 5,200 followers. Its last 15 posts averaged 140 likes, 9 comments, 11 saves and 6 shares.

| Version | Calculation | Result |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Public (likes + comments) | (140 + 9) ÷ 5,200 × 100 | 2.87% |
| Full (adds saves and shares) | (140 + 9 + 11 + 6) ÷ 5,200 × 100 | 3.19% |

Both answers are correct. Quote the public one when you compare with the benchmark table, and keep the full one for your own week-to-week tracking.

## Why do benchmarks disagree so much?

They measure different accounts with different formulas. Socialinsider’s 2025 data covers brand pages and divides likes and comments by followers, which is why its averages sit below 1%. HypeAuditor studies influencer accounts, and for accounts that post mostly reels it now divides by views, which produces higher numbers. Rival IQ found Instagram engagement fell 16% across the brands it tracked in its 2025 report. Read any benchmark as a direction, then compare your result with your own past months.

## What changes your result?

- **Account size.** Smaller accounts usually post higher rates because more of their followers know them personally.
- **Format mix.** In Socialinsider’s 2025 brand data, carousels and reels beat single images.
- **Hidden like counts.** If you hide likes, outside tools undercount them. Your own Insights still show the full figure.
- **Follower spikes.** A burst of new followers lowers the rate until those people start interacting.
- **Paid activity.** Boosted posts and bought likes push single posts up. Exclude them from your average.

## How can you raise your engagement rate?

Give people a reason to act, not just to watch. Ask a question your audience actually has an opinion on, and reply to the first comments within the hour. Make posts worth keeping, like checklists, recipes or how-tos, because saves count as interactions. Make posts worth sending to one specific friend, because a send puts the post in front of someone new; [Instagram shares and sends](https://socipro.com/blog/instagram-shares-and-sends) explains why that matters.

## Questions about this tool

### What is a good Instagram engagement rate in 2026?

One that beats your own median from your last 20 or so posts, measured the same way. Published figures disagree because they sample different accounts. Socialinsider's 2025 brand data averages 0.48% by followers, while HypeAuditor calls 2% to 3% good for a creator with about 10,000 followers. Compare yourself only with a benchmark that uses your formula and a similar audience.

### Should I include saves and shares in the calculation?

Include them when you track your own progress, because Instagram counts saves and shares as interactions and they often say more than likes. Leave them out when you compare with published benchmarks or with another account. Most public studies only see likes and comments, and outsiders can't see your saves or shares at all.

### Why is my engagement rate falling while my account grows?

Because the follower count is the denominator. New followers, especially from a viral reel, rarely interact as much as your oldest fans, so the rate dips even when total likes rise. Smaller accounts tend to post higher rates for the same reason. Track total interactions and engagement by reach alongside this number before deciding anything has gone wrong.

### Do bought likes change my engagement rate?

Yes, on that post. Paid likes raise the top line of the formula, so any post with a likes order will show a higher rate than the posts around it. Mark those posts in your tracking and leave them out of your median. That keeps your baseline honest and stops normal posts from looking weak by comparison.
