# TikTok shadowban: how to tell, why it happens and how to fix it

TikTok never says shadowban. It does document posts and accounts kept out of For You, search limits and restrictions. How to spot each one and appeal it.

The short answer

TikTok doesn't use the word shadowban, but it documents three real limits: one post made ineligible for the For You feed, a whole account made ineligible for recommendation and harder to find in search, and restrictions for deceptive behavior. Each leaves a notice in post analytics, your inbox, your profile or Account check, and each can be appealed.

Key facts

- TikTok's guidelines say a video with few views 'doesn't necessarily mean it broke a rule.'
- If you repeatedly post content unsuitable for the For You feed, TikTok says your account and posts won't appear there and will be harder to find in search.
- TikTok may restore an ineligible account automatically, depending on how much of its content is unsuitable; otherwise you can appeal.
- Violations expire after 90 days, and deleting a violating post does not remove the violation.
- TikTok's current For You feed eligibility standards were released August 25, 2026 and took effect September 24, 2026.

“Shadowban” is the word creators use when views fall off a cliff and nobody explains why. TikTok doesn’t use it. Its Community Guidelines, help center and Safety Center describe something narrower and more useful: content and accounts that are allowed on TikTok but not recommended, plus restrictions that follow certain behavior. The difference matters, because each of those limits leaves a visible notice and each has a way out.

This guide sorts the documented limits from the folklore, as of October 2026. It is based on TikTok’s For You feed eligibility standards, released August 25, 2026 and effective September 24, 2026, and the help center pages that explain how creators see and appeal decisions.

A note on paid numbers before the details. If you [buy TikTok views](https://socipro.com/buy-tiktok-views) for a video TikTok has marked ineligible, the counter rises but the video still won’t be recommended in the For You feed, because eligibility is decided before any ranking happens. Diagnose first; spend later, if at all.

## Does TikTok actually shadowban accounts?

Not under that name, and not as a silent penalty. TikTok’s position is that when it limits recommendation, it tells you. What creators call a shadowban maps onto four documented situations.

| What creators call it | What TikTok calls it | Scope | Where the notice appears | Way out |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Post shadowban | Ineligible for the For You feed | One post | The post’s analytics | Appeal from the notice |
| Account shadowban | Account ineligible for recommendation | All posts, plus harder to find in search | Inbox notification and a notice below your username | Automatic restoration or appeal |
| Search ban | Restricted from top search results | Account | A notification from TikTok; Account check for any posting limits | Stop the behavior, appeal |
| “My account is limited” | Feature restrictions tied to account status | Posting, commenting, profile edits, messages, login | Account check and Account updates | Appeal; violations expire after 90 days |

TikTok also says plainly that low views alone prove nothing: “If a video isn’t getting many views, it also doesn’t necessarily mean it broke a rule.” Its guidelines add that a video left out of the For You feed can still be found through search or by going to the creator’s account.

## How can you tell if your TikTok is shadowbanned?

Check the places where TikTok records its decisions. The whole sequence takes about ten minutes.

1. **Turn on analytics.** TikTok shows For You decisions only if analytics is on: Profile, then the menu, then TikTok Studio, then Get started under Analytics, then Turn on.
2. **Open the analytics of each recent post.** Tap More insights, or the More options button and then Analytics. An ineligible post shows a notification you can tap to read the reason.
3. **Look under your username.** If the whole account is ineligible for recommendation, TikTok says a notice appears on your profile below your username, and you also get an inbox notification.
4. **Read your account updates.** Inbox, then System notifications, then Account updates lists violation notices.
5. **Run Account check.** In TikTok Studio under More tools, or Settings and privacy, then Support, then Safety Center. A checkmark means no issue; a warning sign means a restriction on login, posting, commenting, profile editing or messages.
6. **Compare traffic sources.** In each post’s analytics, see how much traffic came from the For You feed versus your profile or Search. Recent posts with almost no For You traffic are worth a closer look, even with no notice.

If all six come back clean, TikTok has not limited you in any documented way, and the cause is almost always how viewers responded. The table below helps you read the symptom you started with.

| What you notice | Most likely explanation | How to confirm |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One video stalls, the rest perform normally | That post is ineligible, or its opening lost viewers | Notice in the post’s analytics; retention rate |
| Every new video gets almost no For You traffic | Account ineligible for recommendation | Profile notice and inbox |
| Strong start, then a sudden stop | Safety review as it gained popularity | Post status and any notice |
| You can’t post, comment or message | Feature restriction from violations | Account check |
| Views drift down over weeks, no notices | Viewers respond less to recent videos | Average watch time against older posts |
| Followers drop after a viral video | Normal churn, per TikTok’s Creator Academy | Net growth over the whole month |

## Why does TikTok limit a post or an account?

TikTok’s guidelines describe the For You feed as meant for “everyone from teenagers to great grandparents,” so the bar for recommendation is higher than the bar for being allowed on the app. These are the reasons TikTok documents.

**Not suitable for a broad audience.** TikTok marks “FYF Ineligible” sections throughout its Community Guidelines. Content that stays on the platform can still be kept out of recommendations.

**Misinformation and unverified claims.** Misinformation that may cause moderate harm is ineligible, and so is unverified information about crises or major civic events, or content temporarily under review by fact-checkers.

**Unoriginal material.** “Content is also ineligible for the FYF if it includes unoriginal or reused material without anything new.” TikTok said in 2020 that it doesn’t recommend duplicated content.

**Engagement bait.** “Content that tries to manipulate people into giving gifts or inflating likes or follows isn’t eligible for the FYF.”

**Fake engagement and automation.** TikTok doesn’t allow “the trade of services that artificially boost engagement or trick the recommendation system,” prohibits automation tools and scripts, and says deceptive accounts can be restricted, including limits on appearing “in top search results, or in the FYF.” When it detects inauthentic metrics, it removes the fake likes, followers or other inflated signals.

**Unlabeled realistic edits.** Creators must label generated or significantly edited content that shows realistic-looking scenes or people. TikTok says unlabeled content may be removed, restricted or labeled.

**Other specific cases.** Suspected paid political advertising is ineligible. Content created by an account aged under 16 is never recommended in the For You feed. And newly uploaded videos, or videos under review, may be temporarily ineligible.

There is one more thing that feels like a penalty but isn’t. TikTok’s guidelines say it interrupts repeated recommendations of some topics, such as extreme fitness or dieting, sexual suggestiveness, sadness and overgeneralized mental health advice. A creator in those niches may hit a ceiling even when each video is allowed and eligible. Our explainer on [how the TikTok algorithm works](https://socipro.com/blog/how-tiktok-algorithm-works) covers that variety rule and the similarity check that sits next to it.

## How do you fix a TikTok shadowban?

Match the fix to the notice you found. Guessing wastes weeks.

| What you found | What to do | What TikTok says happens next |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One post ineligible | Read the reason, give feedback, tap Appeal | A successful appeal makes the post eligible again |
| Account ineligible for recommendation | Open the inbox notice or profile notice, review the listed videos, appeal the ones you think were misjudged | TikTok may also restore the account automatically, depending on how much content is unsuitable |
| Violation on your account status | Appeal if wrong; complete the optional policy training if offered | Training can lift eligible restrictions; violations expire after 90 days |
| Deceptive behavior restriction | Stop any automation, engagement trading or bought engagement | Restrictions can include posting limits and exclusion from top search and the For You feed |
| No notice anywhere | Work on the opening and topic of the next video | Nothing to appeal: the system is responding to viewers |

A few rules from TikTok’s help center are worth knowing before you act:

- **Deleting doesn’t erase a violation.** TikTok says deleting violating content does not remove the violation, and it may still reduce your account status afterward.
- **Don’t open a replacement account to dodge a limit.** TikTok may restrict or permanently ban accounts used to avoid a restriction or ban on another account.
- **Appeals are the intended route.** TikTok frames its notices as transparency: “we’ll let you know the reason and give you an opportunity to appeal our decision.”

While an account is ineligible, keep posting only what you are confident meets the eligibility standards. TikTok links automatic restoration to how much of your content isn’t suitable, so the balance of your recent posts is the one lever you fully control.

## What isn’t a shadowban?

Most sudden drops have duller causes. Check these before assuming a penalty.

- **The first viewers skipped.** TikTok predicts each viewer’s chance to finish, skip, like, share or follow. A video whose first audience swipes away stops being shown. That is the normal system working, and our guide to [TikTok views stuck at 200](https://socipro.com/blog/tiktok-views-stuck-at-200) walks through the usual opening problems.
- **The topic changed.** If the people who watched your last ten videos liked cooking, a car video starts with no proven audience.
- **The video is still under review.** TikTok reviews content at upload, when it gains popularity, and when it is reported. Give a new upload time before reading its numbers.
- **A competitor took the slot.** The similarity check swaps out top-ranked videos that are too alike, for example two in a row with the same sound, so trends compete for limited space in each feed.
- **Views returned to normal after a spike.** One viral video doesn’t reset what the next one will get. Compare against your median, not your strongest post.

## Can bought views or followers get you shadowbanned?

They can contribute to the documented limits, and they won’t get you out of one. TikTok’s guidelines say it removes fake likes, followers and other inflated signals when it detects them, and that trading services that artificially boost engagement isn’t allowed. Accounts found manipulating the platform can be restricted from top search results and the For You feed. If you want the full picture of those rules and what they mean for an order, read [is buying TikTok followers safe](https://socipro.com/blog/is-buying-tiktok-followers-safe).

The honest use case is narrow. A modest number of views on a new, eligible video can stop it from looking untouched to the first people who see it, which suits a launch or the first post of a new series. It does nothing for a video TikTok has marked ineligible, and it never replaces an opening that holds strangers. If you go ahead, Socipro looks up your public link and shows you the video before you pay, tracks delivery live, and refunds any undelivered part automatically. ## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a TikTok shadowban last?

TikTok publishes no fixed length. A single post stays out of the For You feed until an appeal succeeds. An account made ineligible for recommendation can be restored automatically, depending on how much of its content is unsuitable, or through an appeal. Separately, community guideline violations expire after 90 days and stop counting toward your account status.

### Will making a new TikTok account fix a shadowban?

No, and it can make things worse. TikTok lets people have more than one account, but its help center says it may restrict or permanently ban accounts used to avoid a restriction or ban on another account. Fix the original account through its notices and appeals instead. A clean account that repeats the same kind of posts will meet the same limits.

### Does deleting videos remove a TikTok shadowban?

Not for violations. TikTok says deleting violating content does not remove the violation, and your account status can still be reduced afterward. For an account made ineligible for recommendation, TikTok ties automatic restoration to how much of your content is unsuitable, so review the flagged videos it lists and either appeal them or decide whether they belong on the account.

### Can my followers still see my videos if I'm shadowbanned?

Usually, yes. TikTok says a video kept out of the For You feed can still be found through search or on your profile. The For You feed is where most strangers find you, so the loss is mostly reach to non-followers. If your whole account is ineligible for recommendation, TikTok adds that you'll also be harder to find in search.

### Do TikTok shadowban checker websites work?

Not reliably. TikTok shows eligibility decisions to the account owner, inside post analytics, inbox notifications, a notice on the profile and Account check. An outside site sees only public numbers such as view counts, which also fall for ordinary reasons like a weak opening. Your own analytics and notices are the only place that answers the question.
