The short answer

TikTok lists the number of likes and the number of gifts on a LIVE among the details it uses to recommend streams in the LIVE feed, next to watch time and comments. Likes are free taps from viewers. Gifts cost viewers coins and earn the host Diamonds. Only hosts aged 18 or older can receive gifts.

Key facts

- For the LIVE feed, TikTok names a stream's likes, gifts, views and the host's follower count as signals (TikTok Help Center, October 2026).
- TikTok says viewer interactions, such as time spent watching a LIVE, generally weigh more than stream details.
- Hosts must be 18 to go LIVE, and 18 (19 in South Korea) to send or receive gifts.
- TikTok lists 1,000 followers as the LIVE minimum, noting it may vary by region.
- Diamonds are awarded based on how popular a LIVE is, and the total shows in the LIVE summary.
- Streams that pressure viewers into gifting or inflating likes aren't eligible for the For You feed.

## What is the difference between likes and gifts on TikTok LIVE?

Two things fill the screen during a busy TikTok LIVE: the stream of tiny hearts from tapping, and the bigger animations when someone sends a gift. They come from different places and do different jobs.

| | LIVE likes | LIVE gifts |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cost to the viewer | Free | Bought with TikTok coins |
| What the host receives | A higher like count | Diamonds, shown in the LIVE summary |
| Age limits | Host must be 18 to go LIVE | Host and sender must be 18 (19 in South Korea) |
| Named in TikTok’s LIVE feed signals | Number of likes | Number of gifts sent, and gifts you’ve sent as a viewer |

Likes are the cheap, fast signal that people are paying attention. Gifts are the expensive one. Both feed into the same recommendation system, and TikTok tells us a fair amount about it. If you’re thinking about a paid order to [buy TikTok live likes](https://socipro.com/buy-tiktok-live-likes), read the rules section below first, because TikTok is specific about inflated LIVE numbers.

## How does TikTok decide which LIVEs to recommend?

TikTok’s help article on recommendations has a section just for the LIVE feed. It splits signals into three groups:

1. **What the viewer does**: LIVEs they like and comment on, creators they follow, their watch time, and gifts they’ve sent.
2. **What the stream shows**: hashtags, number of LIVE views, number of likes, number of gifts sent during the LIVE, the host’s follower count, and the country where the LIVE is happening.
3. **The viewer’s settings**: device, language, location, time zone and day.

Then comes the line that should shape your whole approach: for most people, the viewer’s own interactions, which may include time spent watching a specific LIVE, are generally weighted more heavily than the rest.

Read that carefully. Like count and gift count are on the list, but in the second group. The first group, how long people stay and whether they talk, carries more weight. A stream with a huge like count and an empty chat is sending mixed signals.

## Why do likes still matter on a LIVE?

Because they are the easiest way for a viewer to tell the stream, and TikTok, “I’m here”. A viewer who taps is also a viewer who is watching, and watch time is the heavy signal.

There is also the room effect. People who land on a LIVE from the feed decide in seconds whether to stay. A stream with hearts moving up the side reads as active. A stream with none reads as a room nobody chose to sit in. For a new host, that first impression is often the whole battle, which is the problem our guide on [getting your first 100 LIVE viewers](https://socipro.com/blog/tiktok-live-first-100-viewers) is built around.

This is also why some hosts add paid live likes for the opening minutes of a stream, so the first viewers from the feed don’t walk into a silent room. What that can and can’t do is covered further down.

## Who can receive gifts on TikTok LIVE?

TikTok sets the rules on its LIVE Gifts page. To turn gifts on, you must:

- live in a location where LIVE Gifts is available
- be 18 or older (19 in South Korea)
- be eligible to go LIVE in the first place
- have an account in good standing under the Community Guidelines and Terms of Service

Government, politician and political party accounts, and other public interest accounts, can’t collect Diamonds through gifts.

TikTok describes Diamonds as awarded “based on the popularity of your LIVE”. The more popular the stream becomes, the more Diamonds you collect, and the total appears in your LIVE summary when you end. TikTok doesn’t publish a conversion rate on that page, so treat any figure you see elsewhere with care.

To go LIVE at all, TikTok’s current minimums are 18 years old and 1,000 followers, and it notes the follower number may vary by region. TikTok may also ask you to confirm your age before your first stream, using ID, a selfie, a card check or facial age estimation depending on where you live. Our guide to [going live on TikTok](https://socipro.com/blog/how-to-go-live-on-tiktok) walks through that process.

## What are the rules on boosting likes and gifts?

TikTok’s Community Guidelines, effective September 24, 2026, cover this in two places.

First, the For You feed. Videos and streams that try to manipulate people into giving gifts or inflating likes or follows aren’t eligible for it. That rules out the hard sell: “tap the screen 500 times or I’ll end the stream”, gift goals that guilt viewers, or countdowns that only stop when someone pays.

Second, fake engagement. TikTok says it doesn’t allow the trade of services that artificially boost engagement, and that when it detects inauthentic metrics it removes fake likes, followers or other inflated signals. Penalties range from restricting where your posts appear to banning the account.

TikTok’s recommendation page adds that it reviews LIVEs continually, interrupts ones that break the guidelines, and may stop repeat offenders from going LIVE.

So be honest with yourself about what paid likes are. They change the visible count on screen for the stream they’re delivered to. They don’t add watch time from real people, they don’t add comments, and they can’t create gifts. If TikTok’s systems flag them, the count can be cleaned up.

## How do you earn more likes and gifts during a LIVE?

None of these need a budget:

- **Start with a reason to stay.** Say in the first ten seconds what the stream is for and what happens later.
- **Talk to the chat by name.** Comments sit in the group of viewer actions TikTok weighs more heavily, and people comment more when they get answered.
- **Thank taps and gifts without begging for them.** A thank-you is fine. A demand crosses into what TikTok calls manipulation.
- **Stream at a regular time.** People can only come back if they know when.
- **Use a hashtag that fits.** Hashtags are among the stream details TikTok reads, and a clear title tells people what they’re joining.
- **Stay on long enough.** People who discover you a few minutes in need something to join.

## What does a good running order for a LIVE look like?

Most of the advice above comes down to timing. Here is a simple plan for a stream of about half an hour. Adjust the minutes to your own length.

| Stretch | What you do | Signal you’re working on |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Opening minutes | Say what the stream is about and what’s coming later | Watch time: give people a reason to stay |
| Early middle | Ask one easy question and answer every reply by name | Comments |
| Middle | Do the main thing: the tutorial, the game, the Q&A, the reveal | Watch time and likes |
| Late middle | Thank gifts and taps without asking for more | Gifts, without breaking the For You rules |
| Last minutes | Recap and say when you’ll be live next | Follows and return visits |

The order matters because people join at different times. Someone who arrives in the middle should still find something happening, and someone who stays to the end should know when to come back.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do TikTok LIVE likes turn into money?

No, likes on a LIVE don't pay the host directly. Money on TikTok LIVE comes from gifts, which viewers buy with coins and which turn into Diamonds for the host. Likes still matter, because TikTok lists a stream's like count among the details it uses to recommend LIVEs, but they are a visibility signal, not income.

### Why can't I turn on gifts on my TikTok LIVE?

Usually because of age, location or account standing. TikTok requires hosts to be 18 or older (19 in South Korea), to live where LIVE Gifts is offered, to be eligible to go LIVE, and to have an account in good standing. Government, politician and political party accounts can't collect Diamonds at all. You switch gifts on in LIVE settings before you start.

### Can you go live on TikTok under 18?

No. TikTok requires hosts to be 18 or older to go LIVE, and it may ask you to confirm your age before you start, for example with ID and selfies, a card check or facial age estimation. If TikTok can't confirm your age, LIVE stays off. Viewers under 18 also can't send gifts and are kept out of some streams.

### What happens to bought LIVE likes if my stream ends?

Likes can only be delivered while the stream is live. If you end the LIVE before the order finishes, the rest can't be sent to that stream, so contact support from your order page. Live products have no refill, because the stream is over. Order once you're live and plan to stay on air for a while.
