The short answer

Buying Instagram followers always carries some risk, because Instagram's rules prohibit buying engagement and it removes inauthentic follows it detects. The risk you can control is the provider: use one that needs only your public username, start small, and expect some drop. Accounts that repeatedly buy engagement may stop being recommended.

Key facts

- Meta's Spam policy prohibits selling, buying or exchanging engagement such as likes, shares, views and follows (Meta Transparency Center, checked October 9, 2026).
- Instagram says it tries not to recommend accounts that repeatedly use misleading practices to build followings, such as purchasing likes.
- Since November 2018, Instagram has removed inauthentic likes, follows and comments from accounts that use third-party growth apps.
- Instagram's Terms bar collecting other users' login credentials and buying or selling any part of an account.
- In the US, the FTC's 2024 rule makes it unlawful to buy fake social media indicators that misrepresent influence for a commercial purpose.

## Is buying Instagram followers safe?

Not in the sense of “nothing can go wrong”, and anyone who tells you it is isn’t being straight with you. Instagram’s rules don’t allow it. What you can do is understand exactly what the risks are, which ones you control, and how to keep each one small.

We sell Instagram followers, so we have every reason to be precise here. If you decide to [buy Instagram followers](https://socipro.com/buy-instagram-followers) after reading this, you’ll know what you’re accepting.

Here is the whole picture in one table.

| Risk | How it happens | Who controls it | How to keep it small |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Account takeover | You hand your login to a provider or app | You | Use a provider that needs only your public username |
| Followers removed | Instagram detects and removes inauthentic follows | Instagram | Expect some drop; choose a provider with a refill window |
| Reduced recommendations | Instagram stops suggesting accounts that repeatedly buy engagement | Instagram, based on your behavior | Buy rarely and modestly, never on repeat |
| Non-delivery | The provider takes payment and doesn’t deliver | The provider | Use one with order tracking and a written refund policy |
| Wrong account | A typo sends the order elsewhere | The provider’s checks and you | Check the profile preview before paying |
| Weaker engagement rate | Followers who don’t interact dilute your ratio | You | Keep orders small relative to your audience |
| Legal exposure (US) | Using fake indicators to misrepresent influence commercially | You | Don’t use bought numbers to sell your influence to brands or customers |

The rest of this guide goes through what Instagram and the law actually say, then what to check before you order.

## What do Instagram’s rules say about buying followers?

Three documents cover it. All three are worth reading in full, but here is what each one says.

**Meta’s Spam policy**, which applies to Instagram, lists among the things Meta doesn’t allow “attempting to or successfully selling, buying, or exchanging for engagement, such as likes, shares, views, follows, clicks, use of specific hashtags”. It also says Meta may restrict accounts acting at lower frequencies when other signals of inauthenticity are present. Read it on the [Meta Transparency Center](https://transparency.meta.com/policies/community-standards/spam/).

**Instagram’s recommendation guidelines** list the kinds of accounts Instagram tries not to recommend. One of them is accounts that “repeatedly engaged in misleading practices to build followings, such as purchasing ‘likes’”. Recommendations include Explore, Reels and Accounts You May Like, so this is the risk that matters most for growth. Read it in the [Instagram Help Center](https://help.instagram.com/313829416281232).

**Instagram’s Terms of Use** say you can’t do anything misleading or fraudulent, can’t violate Meta’s policies, and can’t solicit or collect other users’ login credentials or buy or sell any aspect of an account. Read them on Instagram’s terms page.

None of these documents publishes a threshold, a penalty table or a detection method. That’s deliberate, and it means nobody outside Meta can tell you exactly where the line is.

## What does Instagram actually do about bought followers?

The clearest public statement is still Instagram’s announcement of November 19, 2018. It said Instagram had built machine learning tools to identify accounts using third-party apps to grow their audience, and that it would remove the inauthentic likes, follows and comments those apps generated. Accounts it identified got an in-app message, and Instagram said accounts that kept using such apps “may see their Instagram experience impacted”.

The same post explained the bigger danger: people who use these apps share their login details, and their accounts then get used to like and follow others. That is the single largest risk in this whole topic, and it is completely avoidable.

Our separate guide on [whether Instagram can tell you bought followers](https://socipro.com/blog/can-instagram-tell-bought-followers) looks at detection in more depth.

## Is it legal to buy Instagram followers?

In most cases the first problem is Instagram’s terms. In the US there is also a federal rule that covers commercial uses. The FTC’s Rule on the Use of Consumer Reviews and Testimonials, published in August 2024, makes it an unfair or deceptive practice to buy or sell fake indicators of social media influence that misrepresent someone’s influence or importance “for a commercial purpose”. The rule’s definition of those indicators includes followers, likes, views, saves, shares, reposts and comments.

In practice: a creator who wants a new profile to look less empty is in a different position from a business presenting bought followers to customers or advertisers as proof of popularity. We don’t sell for the second use. If your plan depends on using follower counts to win brand deals or reassure buyers, don’t buy them. Other countries have their own advertising rules, and our guide to [influencer disclosure rules by country](https://socipro.com/blog/influencer-disclosure-rules-by-country) is a good starting point.

## Who should not buy followers at all?

Some accounts carry more risk than the rest, or have more to lose. Skip it entirely if any of these describe you:

| Situation | Why to skip it |
| --- | --- |
| You’re about to pitch brands or sponsors using your numbers | That’s the commercial misrepresentation the US rule targets, and a big count with little engagement invites questions |
| Your account recently got a warning or restriction | Meta says it may restrict accounts when other signals of inauthenticity are present |
| You depend on Explore and Reels recommendations for new customers | Losing recommendations costs more than a higher count gains |
| You’ve bought before and plan to keep buying | Instagram’s guidelines single out accounts that repeatedly use these practices |
| You want followers who will buy, comment or share | Bought followers won’t do any of that |

The accounts for which a small order is a reasonable trade-off look different: a brand-new creator profile, a launch account for a band or a product, or a test of whether visitors follow more readily once the profile doesn’t sit at zero. Even then, treat the order as a first impression and put most of your effort into posts people want to see.

## What should you check before you order?

If you’ve weighed all that and still want a first impression for a new profile or a launch, the provider decides most of your risk. Before paying anywhere, check that:

1. **Only your public username is needed.** Nothing else, at any step.
2. **You see your profile before you pay.** A preview catches typos and private accounts.
3. **Delivery is gradual and trackable.** You can watch the order progress, and larger orders take longer.
4. **The drop policy is written down.** Some loss is normal. Look for a refill window and say how long it lasts.
5. **There’s a real refund rule.** What happens if the order falls short?
6. **The promises are honest.** A seller who says numbers will never drop, or that nothing can go wrong, isn’t telling you the truth about the rest either.

## How does Socipro handle the risks it can control?

We can’t change Instagram’s rules or its detection, and we won’t pretend to. Here is what we do control:

- We look up the username you enter and show you the profile before you pay, then check again before delivery. Your account must stay public until the order finishes.
- Delivery is gradual, and you follow it live on your order page.
- Premium includes a refill window: if the count drops during it, you request a top-up from your order page. Quality has no refill. Our guide to [refills](https://socipro.com/blog/refill-explained) explains what a window covers.
- If an order falls short, the undelivered part is credited to your Socipro wallet.

## How do you keep your account healthy after ordering?

Keep posting on your normal schedule, reply to comments, and don’t stack orders. A small drop after delivery is normal. If you see a warning in the app about suspicious activity, read it, follow its steps, and don’t place another order until it’s resolved. ## Frequently asked questions

### Will Instagram ban me for buying followers?

It can, because Instagram's rules prohibit buying engagement, but the steps Instagram has described publicly are milder. It says it removes inauthentic follows and likes, and tries not to recommend accounts that repeatedly use misleading practices to build followings. Meta may also restrict accounts showing signs of inauthenticity. Repeated, heavy buying carries the most risk of all three.

### Is it illegal to buy Instagram followers?

It breaks Instagram's terms everywhere. Whether it also breaks a law depends on where you are and how you use the followers. In the US, the FTC's 2024 rule on reviews and testimonials makes it unlawful to buy or sell fake indicators of social media influence, including followers, that misrepresent influence for a commercial purpose. Using bought followers to win sponsors or impress customers is the risky use.

### How many followers is it reasonable to buy at once?

Start with a small order relative to your current audience. There's no official number, but a profile whose follower count jumps far ahead of its likes and comments looks odd to people and fits the pattern Instagram describes as inauthentic. Small orders also tell you how a provider performs before you spend more. Spread larger amounts over time.

### Can bought followers hurt my engagement rate?

Yes. Engagement rate is usually worked out as interactions divided by followers, so followers who don't like or comment lower it. That matters if you pitch brands with your numbers. Keep orders modest and keep posting for the people who do engage. Our guide to Instagram engagement rate explains the formula in detail.
