The short answer

As of October 2026, Instagram Gifts needs 500 followers, Instagram's Creator Marketplace needs 1,000, and Subscriptions and Live badges need 10,000. Branded content has no fixed number but requires an established presence. Every tool also requires a professional account, age 18 or older, and an audience Meta considers authentic.

Key facts

- Instagram Gifts on reels: professional account, 18+, at least 500 followers, in an eligible country (checked October 2026).
- Instagram Subscriptions and Live badges each require at least 10,000 followers and age 18 or older.
- Instagram's Creator Marketplace requires a public professional account with at least 1,000 followers.
- Instagram pays $0.01 for every Star received through gifts on reels.
- Meta's monetization policies say accounts whose audience significantly consists of fake engagement may lose the ability to monetize.

There is no single number. Instagram has several ways to pay creators, and each has its own minimum. Some start in the hundreds. The ones most people mean when they say “getting paid on Instagram” start at 10,000. And every one of them comes with conditions that matter more than the count.

Here is what Instagram’s help center lists as of October 2026, what each tool pays, and the rule that decides whether a follower count is worth anything at all.

## What are the follower minimums for each Instagram money tool?

| Tool | Followers needed | Other main conditions | How it pays |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Gifts on reels | 500 | Professional account, 18+, eligible country, no collab posts | $0.01 per Star received |
| Creator Marketplace | 1,000 | Public professional account, 18+ | Brand deals you negotiate |
| Subscriptions | 10,000 | Professional account, 18+, eligible country | Monthly fee you set |
| Badges in Live | 10,000 | Professional account, 18+ | Viewers buy badges during Live |
| Branded content and partnership ads | No fixed number | “Established presence,” including “a sufficient follower base” | Brand deals |
| Bonuses | No fixed number | Invitation only, eligible country | Set per program |

Every tool on this list also requires that you meet Instagram’s Partner Monetization Policies and stay within the Community Standards. Accounts that mainly post content focused on children are excluded from gifts, badges and subscriptions.

Many people searching this question are deciding whether to [buy Instagram followers](https://socipro.com/buy-instagram-followers) to reach one of these numbers. Read the section on Meta’s monetization policies below before you do. It changes the answer.

## Can you make money with under 1,000 followers?

Yes, a little, through gifts. Instagram Gifts lets followers and non-followers send virtual gifts on your reels. Viewers buy Stars, and Instagram pays you one cent for each Star received. Instagram takes its share when the Stars are bought, and the app store typically takes 30% of that purchase.

At 500 followers that is rarely meaningful income. It is useful as a signal: if people you don’t know are sending gifts, your reels are landing with them.

The other route below 1,000 is direct deals with brands. Meta doesn’t set a follower minimum for branded content. Instead it requires an “authentic, established presence,” including “a sufficient follower base.” Small, specific audiences can be valuable to the right local business. A bakery cares more about 800 followers in its city than 80,000 scattered worldwide.

## What changes at 10,000 followers?

Two recurring income tools open up.

**Subscriptions** let your most engaged followers pay a monthly fee for subscriber-only stories, reels, posts, lives and broadcast channels. You set the price in the professional dashboard. Instagram’s help page says subscriber-only posts can’t generally use music from Instagram’s library; you need Meta’s Sound Collection or music you are authorized to use.

**Badges** let viewers buy badges during your Live videos. Their badge shows next to their name and their comments stand out. Instagram’s badge help page says its own revenue share is currently 0%, while the mobile app stores collect 30% of in-app purchases. Payments from one supporter buying multiple badges in a single live are capped at $250.

Both pay in proportion to how many people care enough to pay. Ten thousand followers who never watch your lives will buy no badges.

## How does the Creator Marketplace work?

Instagram’s Creator Marketplace connects creators with brands looking for partners. As of October 2026 you need to be 18 or older, have a public professional account and at least 1,000 followers, and agree to the Partner Monetization Policies. It is available in every country where Meta advertising operates, except a short list of places that includes Cuba, Iran and Russia.

Brands searching the marketplace see more than your follower count. They look at who your audience is and how it responds. That is where padded numbers stop helping and start hurting.

## What do Meta’s monetization policies say about fake engagement?

This is the part most “how many followers” articles skip. Instagram’s Partner Monetization Policies include a section titled “Monetize authentic engagement.” It says creators “can only monetize content consumed by their natural, authentic audience,” and that they may not “artificially boost or amplify followers, views or engagement for the purpose of generating more revenue.”

It goes on: creators “may lose the ability to monetize if their audience significantly consists of fake engagement, including, but not limited to, likes, follows, and views.”

There is a legal side too. In the US, the FTC’s rule at 16 CFR 465.8, in force since October 21, 2024, makes it unlawful to buy fake indicators of social media influence, such as followers or views, that materially misrepresent your influence for a commercial purpose. Pitching a brand with a follower count you bought is exactly that. This isn’t legal advice, but the direction is clear.

So, honestly: bought followers are not a way to qualify for Instagram payouts or to win sponsorships. They can make a new profile look less empty to its first visitors. They should not be on an account you plan to monetize, and they should never be part of what you show an advertiser.

| Goal | Do bought followers help? | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A new profile that doesn’t look abandoned | Somewhat | Visitors see a count above zero |
| Qualifying for gifts, subscriptions or badges | No | Monetization requires an authentic audience |
| Winning brand deals | No, and it’s risky | FTC rule on fake indicators; brands check engagement |
| Earning more from existing tools | No | Payouts follow people who watch and pay |

## Which tool fits which kind of creator?

The thresholds tell you when a tool opens. Your format tells you which one is worth chasing.

- **You post short, entertaining reels.** Gifts fit first, because they attach to reels and start at 500 followers. They reward reels that make strangers react.
- **You teach or explain something.** Subscriptions fit better. People pay monthly for depth, behind-the-scenes posts or early access, which suits tutorials, coaching and niche expertise.
- **You go live regularly.** Badges are built for you. They reward a community that shows up at the same time each week and wants to be noticed in the comments.
- **You have a local or specialist audience.** Brand deals, through the Creator Marketplace or direct outreach, often pay more than any in-app tool, because a business values exactly who you reach.

Most creators who earn steadily combine two of these. A cooking creator might use gifts on reels and sell a monthly subscription for full recipes. A gamer might run weekly lives with badges and take one sponsorship a month. Start with the tool that matches what you already post, not the one with the biggest headline number.

## What should you focus on instead of the number?

The metrics that predict income are the ones that show people care.

- **Follows per reel.** Reel insights show how many accounts followed you after viewing. A reel that turns viewers into followers is a reel that builds the audience brands and subscribers pay for.
- **Repeat live viewers.** Badges and subscriptions both depend on people who come back.
- **Sends and saves.** Mosseri named sends as a top ranking signal in January 2025. See [Instagram shares and sends](https://socipro.com/blog/instagram-shares-and-sends).
- **Engagement by reach.** It is the number brands increasingly ask for. Our guide to [Instagram engagement rate](https://socipro.com/blog/instagram-engagement-rate) shows how to calculate it without fooling yourself.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Instagram pay per view like YouTube?

Not as a standing program. Instagram's help center describes bonuses as invitation-only tests that run for a limited time in some countries, and it says it will announce when public eligibility opens. Most Instagram income comes from gifts, subscriptions, badges and brand partnerships instead. Check your professional dashboard to see whether you have been invited to a bonus.

### How much do Instagram gifts pay?

One cent per Star. Instagram says it pays creators $0.01 USD for every Star received through gifts on reels, paid monthly to your payout account. Instagram takes its share when the viewer buys the Stars, and the mobile app store typically takes 30% of that purchase. Your earnings show under Gifts in the professional dashboard.

### Can a personal Instagram account earn money?

Not through Instagram's own tools. Gifts, subscriptions and badges all require a professional account, which can be a creator or business account. Branded content and partnership ads are also limited to professional accounts. You can switch a personal account to a creator or business account in settings, and both types count as professional.

### Can bought followers help me get brand deals?

No, and in the US it can be unlawful. The FTC rule at 16 CFR 465.8 bans buying fake indicators of social media influence that materially misrepresent your influence for a commercial purpose, and a sponsorship pitch is a commercial purpose. Meta's own policies also tie branded content eligibility to an authentic, established presence. Pitch brands with numbers your real audience produced.
