# How to get more followers on X in 2026

How to get more followers on X in 2026, based on how X recommends accounts and posts, the follow limits that apply, and the tactics its rules forbid.

The short answer

To get more followers on X, post replies and original posts that people in your niche engage with, because X recommends accounts based on likes, reposts, follows and who people already follow. Stay within follow limits, avoid follow-unfollow churn, and treat apps that promise followers with caution: X says they may lead to suspension.

Key facts

- X recommends accounts based on contacts, location, likes, reposts, follows and posts people view (X Help Center, checked October 9, 2026).
- X's published For You code gives a new-author boost: posts from authors below an impression threshold are lifted toward a target position.
- The technical follow limit is 400 per day; past 5,000 following, extra follows are limited by account-specific ratios.
- Follow churn and indiscriminate following are banned under X's authenticity policy.
- X's Original Content Rewards program requires at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in 90 days.

## How does X decide who to show your account to?

Most follower advice for X is guesswork. You don’t need it, because X has published a fair amount about how it recommends accounts and posts, and in 2026 it published the For You code itself. Two systems matter for followers.

**Account recommendations** (“Who to follow” and similar). X’s help center lists the signals it may use:

- contacts people have uploaded, if your email or phone number is in them and your privacy settings allow it
- location, such as the city or country you’re in
- activity on X: likes, reposts, who you follow, and posts and accounts you view or interact with

**The For You timeline**, where most new followers first see you. X says it ranks posts with a neural network trained on interactions like likes, reposts and replies, using signals including accounts you follow, posts you like, posts liked by people in your network, and accounts followed by people in your network.

One regional detail: people in the European Union can choose non-personalized suggestions in the Who to follow, You might like and What’s happening modules. For those users, your network matters less and what you post matters more, which is one more reason to keep your topic clear.

The common thread: X recommends you to people whose network already interacts with you. Every reply, repost and follow from the right people widens the circle you can be recommended into. Paid shortcuts like a service that sells followers (we’re one, and you can [buy Twitter followers](https://socipro.com/buy-twitter-followers) at Socipro) change the number on your profile. They don’t put you into anyone’s network, which is what drives the recommendations above.

## What does X’s published code say about new accounts?

X’s For You code, published on GitHub by xAI, includes two rules that matter to small accounts:

| Rule in the code | What it does | What it means for you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| New-Author Boost | Posts from authors whose impressions are below a threshold are lifted toward a target position | Small accounts get a deliberate chance to be seen |
| NewUserMinEngagementFilter | For new accounts, posts below an engagement threshold are filtered out for people who don’t follow them | A new account’s post needs some engagement before outsiders see it |
| Out-of-Network Discount | Posts from accounts you don’t follow are scored lower | Outsiders need a clear reason to engage before X shows you widely |
| Author Diversity | Each extra post from the same author in a feed is scored lower | Ten posts an hour doesn’t mean ten times the reach |

Read together, these say: X will try your posts on new people, but only keeps doing it if those people engage. The first replies and likes on a new post do a lot of work.

## What actually gets you followers on X?

Here is a playbook in the order most accounts should use it. None of it needs a budget, and it compounds: a follower who arrived through a reply is one who may reply again.

1. **Make your profile answer one question: why follow?** Your bio and pinned post should say what someone gets. “Daily notes on home espresso” beats “Coffee lover | Dreamer”.
2. **Reply before you post.** A good reply under a bigger account’s post is seen by that account’s audience. X’s account recommendations use who people interact with, so useful replies build the connections that get you suggested.
3. **Post in one lane.** Recommendations follow interests. An account that posts about three unrelated things gets recommended to nobody in particular.
4. **Write posts people want to pass on.** Reposts and quotes put you in front of the reposter’s followers. Our guide to [reposts vs likes on X](https://socipro.com/blog/x-reposts-vs-likes) shows how X weights them.
5. **Reply to replies.** X’s code gives extra weight to predicted replies between people who follow each other, so conversations with your regulars help.
6. **Join trends you belong in.** Post using the exact trend phrase, as X advises, but only when you have something to add. Our explainer on [how X trends work](https://socipro.com/blog/how-x-trending-topics-work) covers the mechanics.
7. **Use video and images where they fit.** X’s code tracks photo expands, video opens and watch time as separate signals.
8. **Post at a steady rhythm.** Followers come from repeated exposure. X caps unverified accounts at 50 original posts and 200 replies a day, which is far more than you need.
9. **Check what works.** Look at which posts brought profile visits and follows, and make more of those. Our guide to [X views and impressions](https://socipro.com/blog/x-views-and-impressions) explains which numbers in your analytics mean what.

## What should your first month look like?

Tactics are easier to stick to with a plan. Here is a simple four-week shape for an account starting near zero. It isn’t a promise of numbers, just an order of work that matches how X recommends accounts.

| Week | Focus | What to do each day |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Profile and lane | Rewrite the bio and pinned post. Follow a few dozen accounts in your niche that post often. Reply to some of them. |
| 2 | Replies | Write a handful of useful replies under bigger accounts in your niche. Post one original thought of your own. |
| 3 | Original posts | Post once or twice with something people can repost: a short list, a chart, a clear opinion. Reply to every reply you get. |
| 4 | Review | Check which posts brought follows. Drop the formats that didn’t. Join one trend you genuinely have something to say about. |

Two things tend to go wrong in this first month. The first is following too fast to get follow-backs, which looks like the follow churn X bans. The second is posting on too many topics, which leaves X unsure who to recommend you to. Slow, focused and conversational beats busy.

## What does X say not to do?

X’s rules list follower tactics it bans. Some are still sold as “growth hacks”.

| Tactic | X’s position |
| --- | --- |
| Follow churn: following then unfollowing many accounts to get follow-backs | Banned under the authenticity policy |
| Indiscriminate following, especially by automation | Banned |
| Follow-for-follow trades and engagement groups | Coordinating to exchange likes, reposts, follows or views is banned |
| Paying others to inflate likes, reposts, follows or views | Banned, including using or promoting third-party services for it |
| Apps that promise lots of followers | X says these usually violate its Terms and may lead to suspension |
| Multiple accounts boosting one account | Banned |

Enforcement ranges from limiting the reach of posts to locking or suspending accounts, depending on how serious X judges it.

## Where does a paid follower order fit?

We’d rather you understood this than bought blindly. X’s rules prohibit paying others to inflate follower counts, and X warns that follower apps may lead to suspension. Treat any purchase as carrying that risk.

What it can do is help with first impressions. A launch account with almost no followers can look abandoned to a journalist or a customer clicking through. If that’s your situation, an order at Socipro needs only your public username, never access to the account. Your posts must not be protected, so we can check delivery. Premium includes a refill window if the count drops, and any undelivered part is credited to your Socipro wallet.

What it can’t do is the work in the playbook. Bought followers don’t reply, repost or sit in anyone’s network. If you’re aiming for X’s Original Content Rewards, the requirements count verified followers and impressions from verified users, and X’s terms exclude artificially generated impressions.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why did my X follower count go down overnight?

Often because X locked some accounts that followed you. X says that when accounts are locked, it removes them from follower counts across all profiles, so your number can drop without anyone unfollowing. People unfollowing after a post is the other obvious cause, and your recent posts will usually tell you which it was.

### How many people can I follow on X per day?

X's technical limit is 400 follows per day. Once you follow 5,000 accounts, further follows are limited by ratios specific to your account. X also says the technical limit isn't permission: separate rules prohibit aggressive following, and following or unfollowing many unrelated accounts quickly, especially by automation, breaks its authenticity policy.

### Do verified followers matter more on X?

For earning, yes. X's Original Content Rewards program requires at least 500 verified followers, an active Premium subscription, and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. Payouts are based on unique impressions from Premium users. For general reach, X doesn't publish a separate weight for verified followers in its For You documentation.

### Can I ask people to follow me on X?

You can ask in a post, but there's no follow request feature. X says there is no way to send a request for other people to follow you. Its advice is to engage with people, follow accounts whose posts interest you, and post useful information. A clear reason to follow in your bio and pinned post works better than asking.
